After Fiat acquired Chrysler, both companies started to share a lot of technologies between them in order to offer the best possible products. The 500X is the end result of this collaboration and it also happens to be one of the first cars Fiat released on the US market after they bought Chrysler. The 2016 Fiat 500X is an all new car and despite it shares a part of its name with the tiny 500, it actually has nothing in common with it. In fact, it is based on the all new small US wide 4×4 platform which also underpins the new Jeep Renegade as well as the 500L.

Inside and Exterior of 2016 Fiat 500X

On the inside, the 2016 Fiat 500X comes as standard with a lot of tech for the price. There is a premium cloth upholstery, a 3.5 inch UConnect system which offers Bluetooth as well as it allows the driver to see information about the outside temperature or the current song playing on the audio system. There is quite a bit of space both in the front and in the back and the seats are very comfortable for its class. Optional features include leather upholstery with a leather wrapped dashboard, a 6.5 inch UConnect system with touch screen and satellite navigation as well as a better audio system and automatic climate control.

The exterior is very impressive as well with good proportions and a nice look all around. The front and back of the car are reminiscent of those of the 500 car while from the side it does take inspiration from the Nissan Juke with a very similar profile. Unlike the usual 500, the X comes with black plastic moldings on the underside which are there to protect the bodywork from rocks or debris. 16 inch rims are standard but these could easily be upgraded to 18 inch wheels.

Engine Specs

There are 5 different trim levels for the 500X ranging from the base Pop model which also happens to be the only trim level offered with the 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 which offers 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, all the way to the Trekking Plus which is the off-road oriented version of the car. All the other four trim levels are offered with a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter inline 4 good for 182 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Front wheel drive is standard on both models but the 1.4 liter engine is only offered with a 6 speed manual while the bigger 2.4 liter model comes as standard with a 9 speed automatic.

Unfortunately, besides the top trim level, all wheel drive is only offered with the 2.4 liter model and it is a $1,900 option which is a bit pricey. The good part is that the rear wheels are engaged only when the car needs it, so the fuel consumption is not that hurt. In fact, the AWD version of the 2.4 liter engine has the same rated EPA as the front wheel drive car and the 1.4 liter model only offers a boost of 2 MPG on the highway and 3 MPG in the city.

2016 Fiat 500X Price

Just like the other two, the 500X 2016 is available both in the US as well as in Europe and despite the fact it is quite a capable little car, the price is very good for its class. The 2016 Fiat 500X is already available on the US market for $21,000 while in Europe it will cost slightly more due to the extra standard equipment.

Even though it is a completely different looking car than the Renegade, the 500X has a lot in common with it. It shares its engines, floor pan and even it has the same running gear but despite that it is $2,000 more. This is because the 500X is the better equipped car of the two offering more equipment in the base form.
