The Mercedes GLK has been one of the most successful two-row luxury crossovers on the market and because of its success Mercedes is going to release a new generation of the car. However, this time the car will not be named the GLK but rather the all new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and that is because Mercedes decided to name their crossover models according to their size and because the GLK was similar in size to the C Class, they decided to call it the GLC. Unlike the previous model, this all new car is now based on a new platform and thanks to that, it is also around 180 pounds lighter than the previous generation.

Design of 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

On the interior, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is quite impressive, the car offering all the luxury features one could expect. The cabin is similar in design to GLE and the C Class, offering a standard 7 inch display for the infotainment system, a knob and button based control system and a touch-pad which should make using this particular system very easy. As standard the car will come with vinyl upholstery but leather or Nappa leather will be available even on the base model in very different colors. Interior accents will include aluminum, piano black wood and even walnut.

Its design is also vastly different than the one of its predecessor and unlike the usual boxy design, Mercedes went this time for a more similar design to the new GLE with rounder shapes and cleaner lines. The front end is reminiscent of the one on the C Class while at the back the design is all new. We have to say that this particular model is very good looking and despite its increase in size, the proportions are nearly perfect.

Engine Horsepower of 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

There are also going to be quite a few changes under the hood of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class so instead of the old 2.1 and 3.5 liter V6 diesel engines the car will now make use of a smaller 2 liter turbocharged inline 4. This will now make 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque which is nearly as much as the old V6, all while offering even better fuel economy than the old 2.1 liter engine.

Instead of the usual Mercedes 7 speed automatic the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class will now come equipped with a brand new 9 speed gearbox and just like the old model, all wheel drive as standard. This should be a nice addition over some of its competitors which only come as standard with two-wheel drive. A petrol engine is also going to be offered but at this point there is no clear answer from Mercedes about what this engine may be. We expect a 2 liter inline 4 to be offered in some markets as standard while a more powerful V6 will be available as an option.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Price and Release Date

Do not take this lightly though because the GLC is also quite a bit larger than the old model, being 4.6 inches longer and 2 inches wider than before. This also translates in more space inside the cabin as well as better dynamic characteristics on the road. The release date for the US market has been set in November 2015 while in Europe it should come a bit earlier. The price will be similar in both markets and the base model should now cost around $60,000 which is not only more than the older GLK but it is in fact more than any other car in its class being nearly $10,000 more than the Macan S, a very fast and luxurious crossover. This is because the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class will come with a single engine choice at launch with more to follow soon after.
