BMW proved everyone that niche cars can be successful after they released the X6 and when the released the X4 they also saw that smaller versions of the coupe-like SUV can be successful. In order to complete they car roster they are going to release the 2017 BMW X2, a car which is going to complete the X1 range and just like the new generation X1, it is going to be based on the same platform as the Series 2 Active Tourer or the new Mini Cooper. This means a front wheel drive base platform and not the usual BMW rear wheel drive platform as well as new modular engines. Its competitors are going to include the Mercedes GLA as well as the upcoming Audi Q1.
Exterior and Interior of 2017 BMW X2
Its design will be influenced by that of the X4 and the X6, so expect a very similar roof-line as well as a similar general design. However, the front end is likely going to be quite a bit more different with an expected identical design to that of the X1. A unique feature for the BMW X2 2017 is going to be the three-door version which will make it the only small crossover on the market that offers a three-door version. A five-door model is also going to be available with a similar size and a similar amount of space inside the cabin to the X1. A high performance M version is very likely going to be available with bigger wheels and tires than usual, a more aggressive styling as well as a possible quad exhaust in the back.
On the interior, the X2 will be virtually identical to the X1, so don’t expect any real changes. However, in the back there is going to be quite a bit less headroom due to its sloping roof-line and the shorter length. The luggage space on the other hand will be similar but when the seats will be down, there is going to be slightly less space.
Engine wise, the 2017 BMW X2 will use very similar engines to the new generation of the X1, meaning that the base model is likely going to come with a 1.5 liter 3 cylinder turbocharged engine in Europe, engine which will offer around 136 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. In the US on the other hand a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 is going to be offered as standard and it should offer quite a bit more power than the European version with an expected output of around 192 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Both of these will be mated to a front wheel drive system and a 6 speed manual as standard while a 6 speed automatic is going to be offered as an option. Both engines should easily be able to get well over 30 MPG on average.
2017 BMW X2 Performance
A high performance model is also in the works with an expected 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 similar to the one found in the US model. However, the M Division will be given the task to raise the output of this engine to around 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque which should be more than enough to allow it to compete with the AMG GLA. The engine is likely going to be mated to a 6 speed automatic running a more aggressive software as well as an all wheel drive system with limited slip differentials to allow for the most amount of control.
2017 BMW X2 Release Date and Price
The release date of the new 2017 BMW X2 has been announced to be in the Fall of 2015 while the car is likely going to be shown in its final form some time in the mid of 2016. The price should be very similar to that of the X1, so expect the base model to cost around $33,000 while the higher end versions could fetch well over $45,000, depending on the model of choice.
